Illinois State Redbirds are currently 5-4--1 in MACHA Gold with four games to go. ISU will face MACHA Gold foe, Eastern Illinois University, January 18th and 19th. After a non-conference weekend vs. Robert Morris - Maroon, the Redbirds will finish the regular season vs. # 8 University of Iowa which could be the series of the season with MACHA and ACHA playoff implications.
This year marks the first season this decade that Illinois State is competing in the MACHA Gold Division. After finishing second in the MACHA Silver Division in the regular season, ISU went on to defeat McKendree College in the semi-finals of the playoff series 9 to 0 and then emgered with a hard fought victory over Palmer to bring home the MACHA Silver Division Championship. As a result of that performance and an overall record of 31-2-4 the MACHA Board of Directors approved ISU's petition to move up to the Gold Division for 2007-2008.
Now in their first year at the Gold level the ISU Redbirds find themselves in a four way battle for a second place finish in the division. Missouri State is clearly the class of the field right now. The Redbirds were defeated in the first match-up with MSU and took them to overtime before losing the second game of the series.
Second place through fifth is too close to call at this point in the season with Illinois State, University of Missouri, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, and University of Iowa battling it out. Only 2 points separate the four teams. The Redbirds will play two vs. Eastern and two vs. Iowa at home to finish the MACHA Gold regular season.
