8.  Is there a cost to play?
Yes, try-outs are $110.  You get bunches of stuff plus up to 3 nights of try-outs and a full collegiate inter-squad game!
When you make the team, there is a player fee.  Rookies will pay $2650 and Vets $2150
This fee is based on all known costs and an estimated transportation cost.  There could be an additional fee if transportation costs come in higher than projected.

7.  Where are Try-Outs and how do I get there?
Try-Outs are at The Pepsi Ice Center which is 1.5 miles south of campus just off of Main Street.  Most Vets have their own transportation, but it is common for freshmen to be carless.  No problem.  We will arrange for Vets to scoop up those without cars and get your equipment down to The Bird’s Nest.  Then transportation will be easy, as your equipment will be near the rink already.  Let Coach Corley know during off-ice that you need a ride and he will hook the carless up with those who can help.

6.  The Nest?
Yes, we have a 4000 square foot locker room we refer to as The Bird’s Nest.  It has locker space for all 49 players from both the D2 and D3 teams.  It also has a shop with equipment to use to work on your sticks etc.  It also has a Blackstone Skate Sharpener with traditional concave and new Flat Bottom V cuts available.  This is only to be used by our skate sharpener, but you can put your skates in the shop for overnight sharpening once you make a team.  If you would like to get your equipment into The Nest asap, bring it to the first off-ice session at Horton and we will use a pick-up truck to ferry equipment to The Nest afterwards.  If you know a vet, you are welcome to put your equipment in The Nest with their escort.  There will not be enough lockers for all those trying out, so vets use your old locker, rookies, use the old equipment drying racks scattered throughout The Nest.  Once you are assigned a number, you will have a locker.

5.  How will I get to the games?
For road games we pick you up at The Bone Student Center and head to the Nest and off to our opponent’s barn.  All transportation for road games is provided and mandatory.
Road games are typically on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
Typically we will leave ISU around 4:00 PM on Friday and return around midnight Saturday.

 4.   What equipment is provided?  What do I need to supply?
Redbird Hockey will supply you with; game jerseys, practice jerseys, game socks, warm-ups, hockey bag, and greatly discounted sticks (1/2 price).  We will also provide some sock and stick tape if you are nice!  Players who make the D2 squad will be provided with state of the art gloves from Harrow Sports.
You need to be sure to have black hockey pants or covers.  Black helmet with full face protection is mandatory.  D3 players, it would be nice if your gloves were in the red / black family, but we have some wiggle room here.  Just don’t show up with bright green Eagle gloves.

3.  Is there academic eligibility?
Yes, you need to maintain a 2.0 GPA, enroll in 12 hours and pass 9 hours each semester.  If you fail to maintain a 2.0 you are ineligible for one semester or until your cumulative GPA is back above a 2.0    It usually means the end of your collegiate hockey career, so don’t let this happen to you.

2.  When do we practice?
We practice at The Pepsi Ice Center late on Monday / Wednesday or Tuesday / Thursday nights  --  D2 generally at 9:20 and D3 at 9:40.  Once we get to mid-October, we move over to the U.S. Cellular Coliseum and the schedule drastically changes.  The D II team will practice on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 4:15 to 5:30 PM.  The D III team will remain on a Monday / Wednesday schedule taking the ice at 9:45 PM.  Check your class schedule and make sure this works for you.

1.  Will I have fun???
One of the saddest moments of our players’ lives is when they are undressing after the last game of their career.  We are a family who support each other.  We have a blast on the ice and on campus, yet do it while representing our university in a way our President is proud of.  Will you have fun?  You will never forget your experience and you will wish it could go on forever.
