This year's recruiting season was the most exciting ever for Redbird Hockey. The talent is coming to Illinois State! Over the next few months, we will feature many of our top recruits. Get to know them now, you will be seeing a lot of them at the U.S. cellular Coliseum!
Jon Kokkelenberg came to the Redbirds from the Carolina Jr. Hurrancanes U18 AAA program. Jon is a big 6-2 200 pound defensemen, built of solid muscle. Jon has the fire to make him a top player in MACHA over the next couple of years. This heads-up defensemen makes the quick outlet pass and then supports the offensive attack by holding the blueline and sending a whicked slapshot to the net when he gets the chance. With his size, and determination, he goes into the corners for pucks and comes out with the puck or the opponent wishing he had never gone into that battle.
Jon had a 42-9-1 season in 2010 and placed third at the U16 AAA Nationals. He was selected as a top 12 defenseman in the USA Hockey Southeast District, and invited to the National Try-Out Camp.
Jon is durable, playing in all but one U18 game this season. Kokkelenberg had his fill of travel, playing from California to Chicago and Detroit to Washington, Texas, and Pittsburgh. Jon would like to settle down in Bloomington and study exercise science.
