The Redbirds D3 finished the season as the number 2 seed in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey League. The MCHL playoff action will begin Friday, February 25th as the #2 Illinois State Redbirds D3 take on the #4 seed, University of Wisconsin – Platteville D2 at 10:30 AM.
Iowa D3 will play Robert Morris D2 at 1:10 PM Friday. All MCHL playoff games will be contested at The Edge III on John St. Bensenville.
Saturday the #2 Redbirds D3 will take on #3 Iowa D3 at 12:45 PM. This game will be followed at 3:00 PM with #1 Robert Morris D2 taking on #4 U of W Platteville D2.
The two teams with most points after this round robin will meet Sunday, February 27th at 9:30 AM for the MCHL Championship Game.
The teams: #1 Robert Morris University,#2 Illinois State D3, ,#3 University of Iowa D3, #4 University of Wisconsin at Platteville D2.
The prize: The MCHL Championship
ISU has won this prize in 2007 and 2009. If the pattern holds true, this is the year to take the MCHL Championship Trophy home to Bloomington/Normal. The Redbirds have played in the Championship game each of the past 4 years.
Be sure to be there and support the Redbirds and especially their seniors; Jake Niemi, Chris Danca, Jon Olszewski, and Jack Collins. Defenseman Niemi has played 86 games for the Redbirds D3 and serves on the Player Board of Directors. A tough and sturdy defensemen, Niemi is the all-time leader in games played for the Redbirds D3 team. Center Chris Danca currently leads the Redbrids D3 in goals, and has played 69 games. Right Wing Jonny O has been the team’s enforcer for four years and friend to all. He has laced up the skates for 55 games, scoring 19 goals and 17 assists and 97 PIM. Jack Collins is in his first year with the Redbirds D3. The Right Winger has a goal and 3 assists in his 14 games.
